Your place in groups & a vibrant base chakra

The base chakra holds some of our oldest & most primal energy, & it doesn’t get more primal than tribe, which is another way of looking at family.

Tribal energy

Our tribal energy is that which grounds us into our species, humanity, and all other groups – our first tribe, family, our community, our nation, our sporting team, our friendship groups, you name it.

It’s the first energy that is activated and explored after we’re born – a baby spends her first months learning how to process energy through this centre and exploring the physical world, within the security of her family tribe.

It’s in these super early days that the foundation is laid for our relationship to groups & the concept of tribe. How we experience our family directly influences our base chakra functioning and our self-perceived role in groups.

Who you are in groups

If your early days in your family were secure, loving, stable & reassuring, then your earliest foundation in groups will be solid. You’ll likely have a healthy, adaptable relationship to your various tribes.

We tend to take on different roles in different groups depending on their composition and our own personality traits, though there are usually some familiar roles that develop over time.

Generally though, if your foundations were solid you’re more likely to feel at ease, fluid and comfortable being yourself in groups.

If there was disruption, a lack of perceived safety or dysfunctional patterns in your early family experience, it’s more likely there are some distortions in your base chakra energy flow. Your relationship to your groups could have unhealthy patterns too.

This could look like…

  • always trying to get control of the group,
  • slavishly following the group to get approval,
  • putting too much energy into trying to fit in, or
  • being undermining or bitchy to others in the group.

A healthy place in groups

To really feel happy & healthy socially, we want a good strong relationship to our groups. To join & leave them smoothly, to play a positive & valuable role in them, to feel comfortable & confident being ourselves, and to feel at ease in different group roles depending on the nature of the group.

If this wasn’t your foundation, great… the growth journey to get there is completely doable – energy work, supportive therapy or coaching, or many other supports will help.

And as so often in life, if you need to learn something consciously rather than doing it automatically, you’ll develop such awareness & wisdom in the process, you’ll probably end up helping others later on.

A vibrant base chakra

Ultimately your ability to relate well to your groups creates vibrancy and health in your base chakra.

It’s win-win – you get to have fun & feel great socially, AND get all the health benefits of the base chakra.

The base chakra keeps you:

  • present in the moment,
  • feeling safe & calm,
  • with a healthy body,
  • with a healthy nervous system.

It combats anxiety, addictive behaviour, fatigue & adrenal exhaustion, and a whole host of other conditions. It grounds & earths you, keeping you in healthy relationship to the earth & natural environment.

There’s no downside. Dive in and transform your group experience, get good support and share the journey, then enjoy the results for the rest of your life!

Healthy Emotional Boundaries

Building Emotional Boundaries

Building healthy emotional boundaries puts you in such a powerful place in the world – firmly on your own path, with oodles of love and compassion overflowing to share around you. It’s a journey that beckons us all. So how to tackle it?

Why build emotional boundaries?

Knowing exactly who you are rocks. It’s a powerful place to be, knowing your self-chosen place in the world, knowing what’s important to you, knowing how you want to live your life, and knowing that the only person whose judgement matters is you.

Claiming that power means you’re completely in charge of your own life. Nobody else can tell you what to do; they can’t make your decisions for you; and they certainly can’t pressure you, guilt you, manipulate you or coerce you into anything at all. Any of those little tricks will simply hit a brick wall, because not only can you sense and deflect those patterns a mile off, but you’ll also be sending out energetic signals to those who operate that way to stay away – you’ve got higher standards.

That beautiful brick wall blocking all that rubbish is one of your cherished and carefully developed emotional boundaries.

What Are Chakras - The Soul Space Bulimba Energetic Healing Chakra Energy Centres along spine Chakras - Barbara Ann Brennan diagram

What Are Chakras?

Chakras are referenced more and more in health and wellbeing these days, from yoga to meditation to direct energy work. So what exactly are they, and why are they relevant to health and life fulfillment?

What are the chakras?

Chakras are energy centres located up and down the front and back of the torso and head, that connect in to the spine. Each location in the spine has a front and a rear energy centre, which together act as a pair.

Chakras - Barbara Ann Brennan diagramThere are seven major chakras linking in to the spine, illustrated in the diagram:

  1. Base chakra: at the perineum, at the base of the spine, pointing downwards
  2. Sacral chakra: just below the navel, front and back
  3. Solar plexus chakra: in the upper abdomen, front and back
  4. Heart chakra: at the heart, front and back
  5. Throat chakra: at the throat, front and back
  6. Brow chakra: at the centre of the brow, front and back
  7. Crown chakra: at the crown of the head, pointing upwards

What do the chakras do?

The chakras have two main functions:

Energy Healing Training Accreditation

A short note to acknowledge the growing spread of the Energy Healing field in our society. The Australian College of Vibrational Healing in Victoria has been working with the Australian Skills Quality Authority and the Energetic Healing Association to accredit their Cert IV and Diploma of Energy Healing courses to the national training framework. The ASQA governs what we in Australia consider to be necessary for courses to cover at Cert IV, Diploma and other levels. To accredit a course against the ASQA framework means to fit all of the learning and experience and content of the course into the necessary series of learning outcomes, assessment tasks and grading criteria. This is no mean feat for a training and development process as personally and spiritually demanding as Energy Healing! How do we grade awareness and intuitive capacity? How do we objectively assess ability to hold space for another person’s healing process?

The widespread and “mainstream” acceptance of complementary therapies has generally followed this road in Australia and other Western countries. 15-20 years ago Naturopathy and Acupunture were in the midst of this process, to “standardise” training courses against our national quality frameworks. The benefit of this to our society is there’s a level of acceptance around the training a practitioner receives – it’s easier to explain and demonstrate what training you’ve had as a practitioner, and clients can get an idea of it quickly too. The other flow on effect in our society is that once a training course has been fit into the national training standards, health insurance companies are willing to cover treatments in that therapy, as it’s easy for them to meet their internal risk minimisation reequirements of covering therapies.

So there are many benefits to aligning training with our national standards. The challenge is maintaining the full ethical and spiritual integrity of a course in a field as demanding as Energetic and Spiritual Healing, while also fitting into the standard requirements. There is a vast amount to cover in a comprehensive Energy Healing program, across the entire spectrum of the human experience. And the nature of the training is so personal, because the practice of healing is so personal – no two healers are alike, so no two training and development paths will be alike. And to become the best and most authentic healer you can be, it’s necessary to honour the fullness of that training path as completely as possible. How to balance this need with the need to fit the training standards? It’s a tricky one.

There’s another balance to find in training quality too. I’m sure you’ve taken part in training that’s just been an exercise in ticking boxes. The trainers don’t really care about the outcome, about truly helping you to become the best you can be in whatever it is you’re studying. They’re focussed on other things – your student fees, their personal interests, any number of things. Or the teacher truly does care, is passionate about what they’re doing and what you’re striving to become, but there are so many hoops to jump through in enforcing adequate assessment activities or standardised methods that they’re limited in how much of that passion they can actually impart to you. There’s an unfortunate tendency to let training slip into checkboxes and mechanics when it’s all standardised. Curriculum-based learning has its advantages across society, but without doubt it can also sap the spirit and vibrancy out of a potentially magical training journey. How do we keep our training alive and ever-present, while also fitting into our culture’s training standards? The benefits to our wider community in making energy work as accessible and recognised as possible are very strong, and because we’re dedicated to the wellbeing of our society we will make it happen.

It is and will continue to be an unfolding enquiry that we’ll strive towards. For now, it’s great that another step has been taken by the folks in Victoria to take us closer there, and get more energy-aware living out there!

Freeing the Natural Voice – Throat Chakra Healing with the Linklater Technique

I had the opportunity on the weekend to attend the Queensland Shakespeare Ensemble’s workshop Freeing the Natural Voice, teaching the Linklater Voice Progression. Wow! What a deep dive into the free flowing potential of the throat chakra energy!

It was an intense two days of deep body connection – seeking, feeling and releasing the many parts of the body through which our voice vibrates. And there is so much of our body involved in this sacred act of making sound, of giving voice to our soul experience here! From the deep and relaxed action of a liberated diaphragm and belly, to the free and easy functioning of the full vocal channel around the throat, to the natural resonance of our soundings through our skeletal system and the many hollow amplifying spaces in our bodies – our whole system is precisely geared towards the birthright we all share: the gift of expression through sound. And the whole divine process kicked off through an sensitively attuned, intimately responsive impulse of thought, feeling and Being. We have an impulse, a response to our world that is precisely and authentically unique to each of us, and in a free flowing channel the impulse naturally sparks a sound, an action, an expression that arises spontaeously and resonates richly out into the world.

How much of this process is blocked or suppressed in many of us! How many ways we have learned and absorbed to second guess or shut down the free and glorious sound of our responsive expression! And, therefore, what a joyful, liberating experience we then have ahead of us to explore its unblocking, to experience for the first time all the ways we can use the free-flowing, natural expression that is our open resonant voice!

I learned and explored many new techniques and practices over the weekend, and I’m looking forward to integrating them into sessions and workshops, as well as to experimenting more with their effects in my own Being.
