The Two Stages of Life Change

February 8, 2016 0 Comments

There are so many life changes we get called on to make, to take us to a healthier, more vibrant and enjoyable life for ourselves and our loved ones. This is our developmental path in life – the learning and growth that unfolds in front of us.

So what’s the smoothest and most empowered way we can take charge of this growth journey, so it becomes more easeful and fulfilling?

1. Mental Understanding

The first step in conscious life change is generally to gain a mental understanding of where you’re going.

An example of this might mean understanding the new type of relationship dynamic you want to have, perhaps after leaving behind a series of emotionally manipulative relationships. You need to understand that a different type of relationship is possible, and how it can work, before you can really call it in and find a good new partner to create it with.

The more you can flesh out what you expect the new experience to be at this stage, the easier it will be to generate the change in your life. This cognitive understanding is usually acknowledged as the leading piece across all of the stages of development.

2. Embodied Integration

Then the second step is to gradually make your new mental understanding a reality in your life. For deep-seated changes that fundamentally shift our worldview, this can take some time and patience.

To continue the relationship example, you may have only ever learned about or experienced that one type of unhealthy relationship, which is what you’re now wanting to shift. You probably had this reinforced to you from family, friends or our culture over a long period of time, and to undo all of this conditioning and shift yourself to a new approach can take time.

Stay strong in your new cognitive understanding of what you’re shifting to, and allow it to draw you onwards – this is a dramatically improved, healthy and enjoyable new way of life you’re calling in, so allow that to act as your motivation and fuel your stamina to keep going.

Look out for others who align with this new way of being, and use them to anchor it in and support you. Talk with supportive friends or aligned practitioners and get encouragement and inspiration.

You’ll notice bit by bit that you’re getting there, integrating the change. There may be periods of challenge or where you feel disheartened, but they’ll iron out in the long run and you’ll get there. Take the ups and the downs along the way with a grain of salt and don’t put too much meaning on them – trust that you’re on the right path.

Your new way of life

Ironically, the more integrated the change becomes, the less visible it is in your life, so when it becomes a thoroughly embodied new part of your life, you possibly won’t even be aware of it anymore, it will be so normal. So take the time to reflect periodically on where you are and where you’ve come from – it will help your motivation and sense of control over your own life!
